For The Love of Jewelry

I love jewelry.

Love, love, love.

I was cursed (or blessed; it's all about perspective) with an affinity for jewelry since birth.  My dad's parents bought me two infant rings for my Christening.  I still take them out of my jewelry box from time to time.  They make me smile and think of my grandparents.  :-)

These days I wear three rings.  A thin band that has 8 diamond chips in a little wave pattern that I bought in England about 5 years ago, an eternity band of diamonds and rubies that I got when I turned 25 and a simple gold band that the 8 oldest grandkids on my dad's side of the family each bought when my grandma passed away almost 10 years ago.

Now... I'm telling you all that to give a glimpse of the sentimental value that jewelry has for me.  Every piece I own has a story.

Guess what?  When JC came home from Afghanistan, he presented me with this.

A ruby!  Isn't he the best brother EVER?!?! It's hard to tell from the pictures, but it's between 1.5 and 1.75 karats.

Here's the thing... I don't know what I want to do with this fabulous stone.  I like simple; I like classic designs; I'm pretty sure I don't want to break the stone into a pair of earrings.  Any suggestions, my friends?

  1. Can't you just have it set for another ring? It's really pretty....Christine

  2. I would have a ring designed as well. That way, you won't have to break it into pieces as if you were doing earrings. It's gorgeous!!!

set it into a ring ( not the usual diamonds )with blue/green aquamarines on either side or green peridot ( worth considering as it would be so pretty and unusual ...)

  4. Yowza! Nice brother, indeed!

I love the idea of a ruby solitaire, either as a ring or necklace. I don't know if you're a silver or yellow gold kind of girl. Since rubies are a warm stone, I tend to think they look prettier when set in yellow gold. Either way, this stone is going to have a lot of sentimental value wrapped up in it. What a sweet, thoughtful present.

  5. WOW! I wouldn't split it up either. Maybe a ring? or some kind of brooch? I don't know anything about jewelry.

  8. My first thought was to have it set in a pendant.

  9. Oh I love Ruby they are the best. That is my birth stone. If you like to wear rings make it into a ring. Or a necklace. What a nice brother you have..

  10. Gorgeous! Do NOT break it up. Pendant or ring (depending on how big you like your rings to be). I think that lots of window shopping is in your future so you can get some ideas of what style you like and then do a custom design. Can't wait to see the result!

  11. That is BEAUTIFUL (and my birth stone)! I would say a necklace but it would also make a beautiful ring. The oval shape is really unique for a ring.

  13. I would have it set into a pendant or have it set into the gold band you have that's sentimental. Don't break it; it's a lovely shape.

  14. I'd love to see you do something with it that represents your relationship with your brother. What are yours and his birth stones? That thing is huge, but I think it'd make another beautiful ring, but you've just gotta make it representative of the two of you!

  16. Or you can get it set in a bracelet, similar to a Cape Cod Bracelet.

  18. So pretty! What a great brother! I say a necklace! A ring would be HUGE and you might knock it on something! :o)
Hope you're having a great day!

  19. Oh honey it's beautiful! What an awesome brother you have! I say definitely don't break it up! Keep that baby as one big beautiful ruby. I think it would amazing as a ring. You could keep it simple with just the ruby set in platinum or white gold or you could surround it with little diamonds (like the sapphire ring hubby got my for Christmas). A necklace was be pretty too but I think if it were me I'd make it into a ring. I don't think it would be too big as a ring. My sapphire is quite large and it looks fabulous as a ring!
