Channeling Emily Post

OK, ladies...I'm going to close on my house eventually (more news on that in the next few days).  Recently, someone asked me what I'm going to get my Realtor as a closing gift.  As an Emily Post wannabe...I was stunned, perplexed, adrift.  OK, fine.  I'm being dramatic.

In all honesty, a gift for my lovely Realtor (and she is FANTASTIC) never crossed my mind until I was asked.  I've never heard of getting the Realtor/Real Estate Agent a closing gift - but this will be my first time buying a house.

Am I just etiquette ignorant in the real estate arena?

Did you give gifts when you closed on your house?  If so, what???  If I need to buy a gift, I need suggestions!

  1. The gift I gave was the thousands of dollars of commission that she earned from us...same thing when we sold it three years later. ;)

But it sounds like a nice idea. I've never heard of anyone doing that...So she would probably be pleasantly surprised!

  2. I agree that her commission should really be enough. It's not like she is helping you for free. But, if she is the type to go above and beyond for you and help you find exactly what you want, then it might be a nice gesture to get her a little something. As for what, I wouldn't go too extravagant but I would try to find something that seems very "her". I have no suggestions as to what though! Sorry. :)

  3. No. No, no, no, absolutely not. You gave her your business and a big commissions. If you must, a thank you note is sufficient. The best thank you is to refer her to other people.

I've bought two homes - I've never done a thank you.

  4. a realtor gift? no way, their commission is more than enough...what's next? gifts for doctors and dentists? ;-)

Actually, it's the realtor who usually gives the client a gift if it's their first home.

  5. NO. She's getting tons of commission. That's her gift!

  6. She will probably give you a gift. We did not give our Realtor a gift. Perhaps a Thank-You card will do?

  7. Hmm - I have never heard of a Realtor gift, but we opted to not use a realtor when we bought our house so I don't know for sure. I'm mean, isn't the commission she is going to make the gift? I'm not an etiquitte expert either. However, I can't wait to hear all about the house - praying it goes smoothly now! You better give us a house tour sometime :)

  8. I think I've heard of this, but it's not common. We didn't have a Realtor so I didn't have to even think about this!

  9. Um, I've never bought a house, but I would imagine her commission is gift enough!

  10. My mom and sister are both realtors. They have never been given a gift. In fact, they give all their clients a gift the day of the closing. You might give a card and candle or something small in case its custom back East to gift someone with more than a % of the proceeds of the home ... but I don't think its necessary.

  11. I've bought three houses and sold two, and I've never given a realtor a gift. I did have one give me a gift once.

I agree, the commission is enough, and I've used the same realtor to sell the houses after I bought them, so they made money from me twice.
