I Can't Decide!

I'm less than a month away from closing on my house.  Given that it's a short sale - nothing is guaranteed until I actually  close.  That means I can't order furniture, set-up utilities, start changing my address on bills, etc.

If you know me - you know I am ORGANIZED!!  I hate "last minute".  So, I'm bound and determined to have a list of utility companies to call when I really do have the last document signs.  Presuming my hand isn't broken from signing a forest of paperwork, I want to get EVERYTHING set-up that day.  (Yes, I am unrealistically ambitious...thanks for noticing!)

Your going to laugh at me...but where I'm stuck is cable/Internet/phone.  Do I do bundled services?  Buy each separately?  Seriously, ladies.  I NEEEEED your advice!

I'm really considering both Comcast and DirectTV.  Anyone have positive or negative experience to share?

  1. Oh, I wish I could be more help. We don't have a traditional bundle because we don't have a home phone. Our house is 55 years old and the phone lines are awful - super staticky. We have both our TV and internet with U-Verse. We got an awesome deal when we moved in and we love the service, but it is starting to get more expensive. I know U-verse isn't available everywhere though. We used to have DISH and liked it just fine. I have never had DirecTV, but all of my in-laws do and they seem to really like it. Good luck though!

  2. I had DirecTV - LOVED it. Miss it still. I generally find that bundles include things I have lived without for years - and so single services suit me fine. And usually save me money.

  3. Comcast has been my favorite of all the hellacious cable companies I've dealt with in the last years (Timewarner, cox, comcast, and that which won't be named in the lou because I hated it so much I can't remember). Actually, if comcast was an option here ... I'd totally pick it over uverse, which is what i have now. The only satellite I've ever had was dish and holy mexico, that is the absolute WORST thing I have EVER had! EVER! Hope that helps! :)

  4. Ours was a great deal as a bundle the first year but then nearly doubled the next! I'd call and see what both offer. You can probably play them off of each other and get a good deal if they want your business! Good luck because I have yet to find a great option, of course I'm really limited here.

Ours came down to customer service. We like what we have but the other one we had is better. However they had THE WORST customer service! It took 3 tries before someone finally solved the problem and we already had the work order put in for the new company by then:)

  5. I wasn't that impressed with Comcast. If the weather was bad, the cable would flicker. The tech support wasn't very helpful either. I switched to Verizon with a bundle which included Directv but with the special deal for a year. Now that the special is over, the bill for phone, internet and directv is 153.00. That is too much to be paying so I'm looking for a different service. Maybe going bundle is more money in the long run??

  6. Be careful with bundling services -- while they sound like a great deal, we learned/discussed in business school that it's usually an easy way to get people to add in services they don't really want/need!

  7. I have a years long Directv nightmare, so I never recommend them. I had them forever, then when I went to cancel they tried to charge me for not returning equipment (that I did return) and other crap.

I do have my stuff bundled, phone, internet, and satellite, and it's saving me money. That might partly be because my boyfriend thinks we need crazy things that I might alone not choose to have though!

  9. I just switched to the Comcast triple play. Well worth bundling everything together :) I too recently had a major problem with Directv. I can give you more details but some of their people are evil.

  11. I've had Comcast for the last couple of years and they have been amazing! I have a bundle package with them. It was just cheaper in the long run to do that.

  13. Unfortunately, no company is going to satisfy everyone. I think there is someone out there with horror stories from each and every company. We have Comcast and its okay. It's highway robbery, but we don't have too terribly much trouble with our services going out, etc. We initially started out by bundling our services because it was a lot cheaper, but the special rates ran out after having the service for a year. When that time came, we changed some things around so that our bill didn't change. So just beware of that! Good luck honey. :)

  14. First of all - congrats on your house! I hope everything goes smoothly so you can close and start getting settled in.

IMO, bundled services depend on personal preferences. They aren't a deal for us, but some of our friends have saved quite a bit by switching to a bundle.

  15. I hate Comcast with all that is in my being. Their service sucks. So does the reception. 10-20 seconds of shows just disappear. Thank goodness for AT&T and Uverse when we move! Good luck!

  16. I currently have Comcast cable TV & Internet... the internet isn't as great as it used to be & the DVR functions of the cable TV are awful but we're in a rental right now so we make do.

I had Dish Network in my house in TX before we moved here & I loved having satellite TV. I never had any problems with the signal & the DVR was really awesome. My parents have DirectTV & I think it might even be better than the Dish Network service that I had.
