Just STOP! A Photo Editing PSA...

I love Instagram filters and the auto "fixes" available on most smart phones.  I do.  Truly!  They have the ability to make your standard candid truly beautiful.  In the right hands, those filters or smart phone gadgets can crop, heighten the color, fix red eyes and a host of other really cool things!

Here's an image I found showing substantial, but natural looking changes to a selfie.  (image via)  For purposes of this post, I'm going to say it's an example of an "app success".

I know a number of amazing photographers who have Photoshop actions that fix minor blemishes, bring down the shine of their subject's perspiration, smooth the smallest of wrinkles and otherwise tweak pictures.  And I have no issue with that!  They key being that they are making small adjustments and have the sense to know what to adjust...or not.

Here, my dear friends is where I things start driving me up a wall...

For the LOVE. OF. GOD, please don't edit the crap out of your picture and then lie about it.  If you aren't a professional photographer, chances are, I spotted your edit a mile away.  If I've seen you in person - a picture of you without freckles, wrinkles or laugh lines just is not going to fly.

(image via)

Here is an example of a makeup app "fail".  See how she is buffed to the point of blurry, has an unnatural drop shadow and an almost plastic quality?

Another example (image via).  Just not natural...

I also beg that a little practicality be utilized before using one of those auto-makeup apps.  If a baby is in your picture.  STOP.  If a man is in your picture. STOP.  Sadly, I've seen pictures on one person's Facebook wall this week that featured both a very small child and a man with makeup on because common sense was not utilized before A. using the make-up app and B. posting the darn thing to Facebook.

I guess I want to say - you're pretty just the way you are.  Please stop editing yourself to the point of being unrecognizable or unbelievable.  Or I'm going to come take your phone and delete the damn photoediting apps.  Just sayin'...

Kristin's Wedding

As some of you may remember, I was one of my cousin Kristin's bridesmaids when last we spoke of her upcoming nuptials!  (In case you don't remember...here's a link to the post I did on her bridal shower)

Fast forward almost two years and now I need to catch you all up on what you missed - including Kristin's wedding!

This pretty lady indeed got married on August 2nd, 2013 to the love of her life with their (then) almost 9 year old son quite excited (as were everyone else in the bridal party).

Here she is with her mom!

The wedding was lovely and the country club that hosted both the ceremony and reception was absolutely beautiful.  Now, you all know that I'm a klutz.  And Kristin's wedding was no exception to my rule about tripping over my own feet.  I was the first bridesmaid "out of the gate" so to speak...and unfortunately did NOT count on the aisle we were walking down to be lush green grass that was horribly uneven.  People, I fell!  Flat. on. my. face.  It was mortifying!  I still remember all the faces that were turned towards me going from smiles to looks of shock.  Not fun...  It got hurt and tried not to cry during the ceremony. My goal was to make it through the ceremony and reception without drawing any further attention to myself.  For once - mission accomplished!

Unfortunately, I did have a super fun trip to the ER to have my knee looked at at midnight. I have to thank the hospital staff for taking such good care of me and the mess that I was - still in my hot pink bridesmaid dress (um..yeah.).

Stay tuned for my next foray into being a bridesmaid....

Notes From A Snowdrift...

I'm alive!  Thanks to the sweet people who emailed and tweeted inquiring how I weathered "Nemo".

It was quite the adventure, I tell ya!  Snow started coming down lightly Friday morning - which I took to mean as "let's go grocery shopping and try to locate the last D batteries known to man".  I spent the afternoon taking pictures and taking heat and electricity for granted.  You know where this is going, right?!

I lost power Friday evening as the snow started getting heavier.  That meant no heat either, making my already drafty house cold very quickly!  The pups and I bundled up with fleece and down blankets and hoped power would be back in the morning.

No such luck!  Snow continued to fall and the temperature inside my home continued to drop.  Saturday night I couldn't sleep I was so cold.  Turns out that it was below zero out...and probably only 20-30 degrees in my house!  My parents (who had power from Saturday morning on) showed up to help me dig out Sunday afternoon - BLESS them!!!!  When I realized that power wasn't going to come back on that day, I rounded up the furkids and make the trek to their home.

By Monday back, most people had power back. NOT ME!!!!!  I did get power back Monday evening about 7 o'clock or so.  HURRAY!!!

And...if you read this far, you get rewarded with pictures.

Yes, I did...and still do have snow drifts taller than my windows.

Check out the awesome icicles!

Brady was a little cranky that he had less luck scaling the snowdrifts than Paisley did.

Paisley is my little snowbunny!

Well, DAMN!

Ever have one of those times where someone (or life) surprises you?!  And not in a GOOD way?

Yeah. Today was one of those days....

JC (my brother, for those of you new to ye olde blog) called my office as I was booting up for the day.  No "Hi, how are ya?", "Whatcha doin'?", "Where'd ya put the fabric softener?".  Nothing.  Instead I got yelled at - to open a new web page - NOWWWW!

It turns out that one of JC's friends up in the north country (and you Army ladies know exactly where I'm talking about) did something colossally stupid. Twice. And got caught.

This man, whom I have previously held in high esteem - decided to rob a store pharmacy of their Oxycontin. The same place both times!  One time while wearing the platoon sweatshirt!  He parked is truck in plain sight of the security cameras!

I know this man!  I've spent hours talking to him, goofing around with him, his wife and their two kids.  My heart breaks for his wife and their two sweet pre-teen kids.  The only consolation is that they live a few states away and can be shielded from this a little.

It's way too soon to know how this will all pan out - but I'm not encouraged by the fact that he's being held on $25,000 bail.  I can't help but wonder if his cries for help were missed by all of us.  How did we not know?!?!  Not a single one of us...

...and all I can say is - well, damn!  Now what?!?!

Did I Do That?!?! - A Note From Beckett

Hi! Iz Beckett.  Momma says she can't concentrate with the sound of her credit card crying so loudly - so I need to tell you what I "did" yesterday to make the credit card so sad. Though, I do have to say - iz dachshunds on the card, so technically, they are howling in pain.

Sigh. Just tell the story Beckett.

OK.  Me and my sib-ster Meadow hang out a lot at Grammy and Grampy's house cuz Momma still haz no fence at da yard of our new house.  We iz good at opening the indoor gates.  Really good.  We got skillz.

Beckett...... STORY!

Meadow opened the fence in Grammy's living room.  We gotz in and I found the CHOCOLATE!  An entire bag of milk chocolate chips from the Grammy's baking stash that she thought was well hidden.  So I atez the entire bag all by myself.  And chocolate makes you thirsty.  Did you knowz dat?!

So I drank and drank and drank.  Then, I erupted like Mount Vesuvius! No gaggy sounds.  Just barf. Of course, Grammy had no clue I ate chocolate. So after the 9th or 10th pukey, she brought me to the V-E-T!  My tummy was so distended, that at first they thought I might have bloat.

After lots of x-rays, and poking & prodding - they decided they needed to see into my tummy.  I heard dat, got upset, realized that my Momma wasn't with me and tried to make a break for it.

Seriously. They did x-rays, and as soon as they said surgery - he ran out of the procedure room.  The vet tech laughingly told me that it took three of them to catch him.

I gotz an IV, and had a good nap.  Momma said that they flushed all the chocolate out of me and then made me eat charcoal twice.  The worst part?  I hadz to stay in the V-E-T office overnight.  I mean, my favorite tech Cass stayed with me...but no Momma!

I was really lucky, and Cass let me come visit Beckett even though the vet's office closed at 5 (I couldn't get there sooner).  She also proclaimed him an absolute angel.  I just wish I hadn't had to pay so much money to hear that...

Seez?  I still haz a chubby tummy.  At least I get to rest with my Momma now.

But, Seriously....

Sorry I didn't blog much in the past week, ladies.  It was one heck of a week.

I had ice seep into my cellar, build up and crack/freeze pipes.  Then my oil company forgot to deliver oil to me.  Then the pipes froze enough that I couldn't feed water into my boiler.

Which meant I lived like a Pilgrim from Tuesday afternoon through Friday afternoon.  Four days without running water and inconsistent heat was a challenge.  Despite needing to melt snow to bath, to flush the toilet, to cook, etc - I REFUSED to give in and go stay at my parent's or cousin's house.  Stubborn, much?!?!  :-)

Add in a less than lovely (read: craptastic) work week, and a few other unforseen complications, and by Friday afternoon - I wanted to cry into a really large glass of wine.  But I made it!  I have heat, running water and enjoyed a fantastic game night last night.

This week will be better, right? It has to be!

It's Official...

...I bought a money pit.  I've already told you that a lot of things in my house are suffering (majorly, majorly suffering) from the "home improvements" that the last owner made.

I have windows from the 1930's that come out like jigsaw pieces.  The electric is a fire hazard in places.  My roof leaks. I'm trying to laugh through it all.  I'm TRYING!

Today took the cake.  I got home just in time to watch the chimney FALL OFF THE HOUSE.  It was on the roof and then *poof* it was on the ground.  Now, I feel that I should point out that the chimney just got re-pointed two weeks ago.  The same company came back to replace my roof.  What they didn't know is that the roof already had THREE layers of shingles on it (illegal much?!?!).  When they pried off those shingles, it exposed some old bricks that just disintegrated.

So, when does the film crew arrive?  I'm pretty darn sure that I'm starring in the re-make of The Money Pit.

Gone In A Flash...

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to commemorate the passing of my favorite ever camera.  You lived a short, but valuable life - providing great color, clarity, zoom and facial recognition.  You will be missed.
Yep, my poor camera is dead.  I love, love, love taking pictures. It's rare that I go more than a few days without using my camera.  My cute little Canon PowerShot was always with me. Sure that meant that my purse was that much heavier...but you never know when you'll have see something cute, funny, sweet, absolutely beautiful and need to take a picture to share with other.  It suffered a "fall injury" that seemed minor.  It barely touched the floor...but that was enough to jam the battery/memory card door shut.

There was a little prying with fingertips.
Much googling ensued.
To no avail...

I ended up going to BestBuy (where I bought the camera), where they promptly told me that they have no idea how to actually fix cameras and that I'm S.O.L. (Shit Outta Luck, for those of you who don't use the same random acronyms that I do.) I went on to Ritz Camera.  They were very helpful and told me that I could fix the camera.  For um...$15 less than I paid for it...and it would take 8-12 weeks. *Update: After two frustrating encounters with camera experts, I let my dad have a crack at it.  He did get the little door open on the camera but somehow that killed the circuit.  Before dad's fix, it turned on...but there was no memory card in there (I had just removed it before the drop) and now the door opens but the camera won't turn on. Whimper....*

So, now I'm stuck.  I know that a camera is an "extra" for some people, but it's a neccessity for me. Do I buy a cheap one and suck it up until I can buy a new nice camera?  Do I try and find a way to fit a new camera into my already tight budget?  At least I get to borrow my mom's fabulous camera while I decide!  (Mom is awesome, and if she isn't careful...I'm permanently borrowing this sucker!!  Well... maybe not.  But it's tempting!)

What's That Smell?!?!

I think I told all of you that all the rain and resulting flooding in March claimed the lives of both my washer and dryer. It put my hot water heater on CPR (as in, for almost half the month - I had no heat or hot water). Last weekend, I discovered that all those tiny droplets of water cumulatively claimed the live of a third victim - my extra freezer.

Unfortunately, the motor still ran, but everything dethawed. My freezer was essentially brain dead.

I came to discover this unfortunate death last Saturday morning. How you ask? THE SMELL!! I wandered past my cellar door and the smell of rotting/rotten meat had seeped out of the now dead freezer, up the cellar stairs and was starting to permeate the air of my front hall, kitchen and den.

It took three people and two nauseating hours to clean up. I now mourn the loss of my freezer and the hundred of dollars of tasty foods that went to waste....

On the bright side - FEMA made a swing by today and we're likely to get funding to replace the washer & dryer and add a dehumidifier. *I can.not.believe that I just said that a visit from FEMA was the bright side to my story.  Who ever thinks they're going to be among those needing disaster relief?!?!*

It's Funnier Now That It's Over....

Ladies, it's been a long week.  It rained in Massachusetts almost the entire month of March.  We got about 15 inches of rain - not to speak of the flooding that left many of us without heat, hot water and power for days at a time & the poor folks that have had to get evacuated by the Coast Guard, National Guard or local fire/police departments.  But, it's over now and I can appreciate the resilience of New Englanders.

Below are a few quotes from Boston.com (aka Boston Globe) this week.

A Big Ole Basket Of CRAZY!!

I wasn't going to share this story...but it's too good to hold back, and I think I can make it vanilla enough that you can enjoy without me giving you all the details. *Names have been changed to protect the innocent*

Now, sit back and mull over this doozy. For your reading pleasure, I've broken this up into chapters. It's a bit (OK, a LOT) on the long side. Sorry!

Chapter 1
This story, like many others, starts with a boy. We'll call him Naive Boy or NB. Well NB makes a career change that requires he travel halfway across the country to start training. During this flight he meets a girl that we're going to call Crazy Lady or CL.

Well, NB and CL talk a bit while sitting next to each other on the flight and are kinda interested in each other. Not enough to exhange phone numbers - but enough to exchange addresses.

Chapter 2
Fast forward three weeks (of no contact) and a letter shows up in NB's mailbox. CL wrote a letter that was six pages - DOUBLE SIDED pledging her undying devotion to NB. I'm told that she waxed poetic of how they are fated to be together. All very Shakespearean. Luckily NB sees the utter lunacy in this letter and throws it away. To his utter disbelief (and mine amongst others) - a similar letter shows up two weeks later that is also thrown away.

Chapter 3
About six months have gone by and not a peep from CL. All believe that NB is in the clear. No such luck my fine friends! NB gets a FaceBook account one day and CL immediately finds him. Literally the first day he had the FaceBook account; no joke. And he even more naively included his phone number, email, etc. on his FaceBook page. Dumbass!

Chapter 4
Over the next 7 months or so, NB settles into a routine of ignoring CL's intermittent FaceBook messages and e-flirting. He certainly doesn't encourage her... but a girl like her is taking silence as agreement. Then she announces that she's flying into Boston and demands to see NB! I watched with humor as he emailed, texted and ultimately tried to talk her out of coming to Boston. CL showed up in our fine city. NB faked sick as the only acceptable excuse he could find to get out of seeing her.

Chapter 5
A span of 5-6 more months pass with virtually no contact from CL. Halle-freaking-lujah!

Chapter 6
NB gets sent on an extended work assignment. This puts CL in a tizzy when she reads this on FB and she again professes her undying devotion. During this time frequent messages of support/encouragement/pride are posted on NB's FaceBook wall by friends and family & a number of us respond to his status updates as soon as they pop up.

Our attentiveness garners a (female) friend and I nasty-grams from CL. She wants to know who we are, what we want, an explanation of our relationship with NB and essentially tells us to back off. It was the FaceBook equivolent of marking her territory. After a giggle over the ridiculousness of CL, both my friend and I wrote return nasty-grams. Childish? Perhaps. Do I regret it? Not for a single second. Come to find out - she wrote similar nasty-grams to other female friends of NB. It seems that we all independently pointed out that if she was important in NB's life - she'd know who we were.

Chapter 7
NB returns from his work assignment and catchs wind of all the havoc CL has created. He calls her to tell her to stop. Somehow, she hears - TRY HARDER and starts writing suggestive comments on his FaceBook wall. He deletes said comments.  This angers her. She announces she has a boyfriend and leaves NB alone for almost 2 months.

Chapter 8
CL dumps her boyfriend and starts FaceBook stalking NB again about two weeks ago. NB ignores her, which makes her even more determined.

Chapter 9
This brings us to last night. I find out the CL has tracked down NB's mom on FaceBook and written her an extremely lengthy email. It implores NB's mom to convince NB to talk to her, incites how stubborn NB is for not responding to her and states that CL just can't imagine living without NB. "They deserve forever."

I feel like I should point out that CL and NB's mom have never physically met, never spoken to each other and most of all that NB's mom would like to go the rest of her life without meeting this crazy bitch.

What do you think? Can I pitch this real life story to Days of Our Lives? I wish I could make this kind of stuff up. There are so many more details that I want to tell all of you!!

Regretsy

I love Etsy!  There are some simply amazing things to be found (and BOUGHT; immediately, no questions asked).

However, when I'm looking for a good laugh, I head on over to Regresty

Nothing makes me giggle like a dress that's made out of yarn and costs $335!

Things That Make You Go Hmmm....

It's been a really odd day - on a number of levels. I'll get to some of it in a later post... but now I'm going to share the truly stupid things I've seen today.

I hope you find it as amusing as I did. :-)

Yep, those are Mary Janes with individual toe slots. Weird, right? The kicker?!?! I saw them on a man! They are Vibram Five Fingers...(I had to run to Google to figure it out) and those suckers cost $100. What guy in is right mind is going to spend that money to have girly looking shoes that have individual toe slots?!?! The better question is - Where the HELL is your wife and did she really let you dress yourself this morning?

Did we go back to the 80's and no one told me? No??? Are you sure?!?! I wish I could have gotten a picture of the actual woman in my building that sports a mullet.... but I'm just not that slick (and neither are my friends!). I blame BlackBerry. It's their fault that I can't turn off the "shutter" noise on my phone. Darn them!

Anyway, this is as close as I could find... but imagine the crown of her head cut shorter. Like crew cut/military cut/wiffle SHORT. And the poor woman thinks she looks good! I genuinely feel bad; when I'm not laughing hysterically or wondering if her hairdresser does that to her as punishment.

My last "OMG" of the work day was a show-stopper. Not only was he wearing Tevas and socks... but he was head to toe in lycra. I.shit.you.not! He was all suited up to ride his bike home, and unfortunately thought Teva's were a good shoe option to do so. Dear sir, I appreciate that you're going to get your exercise. It's to be applauded; but also know that lycra leaves nothing to the imagination. Seriously - NOTHING!
(Many thanks to the fine folks whos pictures I pilfered from Google)

Oh, and because we've had so much rain this summer, our office ventilation system has been blessed with extra little visitors. We've got these pesky little fruit fly-like things that come out of the air vents and bother us all day. I swear our VP must look out her office window at us, see is flailing and trying to shoo these things away and get a good laugh at us. We spend so much time trying to get rid of these stupid gnat/fly things that we look like we're somewhere on the autism spectrum.

Anything odd that you'd like to share?

Attack of Bridezilla...

For the past few weeks, I've been privy to a story about a Bridezilla. Not just any Bridezilla...but the QUEEN OF BRIDEZILLAS!

The story is a smidge long, but stick with me. I'll be you'll be just as appalled and amused as I am.

For her own protection, I'm going to name this bride Anna. Well, Anna and her boyfriend Joe (also a fake name) get engaged last fall. She sees the ring he bought and decided it isn't big enough and sends him back for a 2.5 carat cushion cut with 3/4 carat baguettes on each side. It seems that once Anna got that ring on her manicured little finger - all semblance of sanity exited the building. I've been assured that she was "normal" before she got engaged.

Anna had her sister and MOH (to clarify, this is two people - her MOH is not her sister) organize the shower to happen last weekend - making it clear that she expected EVERYONE to break their holiday weekend plans to stick around for her. In preparation for the shower, she and Joe registered for gifts. Normal, right?! Not for Anna! She registered at Bergdorfs, Williams-Sonoma, Crate and Barrel...and...wait for it....TIFFANY'S! Well get back to the Tiffany registry in a minute. It is the piece de resistance of this whole story.

Come to find out, Anna is planning a wedding for 275 (Holy crap, btw...I don't think I know 275 people!!) and invited people to her shower that she opted not to invite to the wedding. That is totally classless in my opinion. You might as well write on the shower invite "don't bother showing up, I just want the gifts". This woman seriously needs someone to give her a copy of Emily Post's etiquette books...PRONTO!!

Come the day of the shower, Anna voraciously opens all her gifts (OK, I admit - I like gifts too...but, moving on...). Girlfriend threw the mother.of.all.hissy.fits when she got a gift that wasn't on her registry. At the end of the event, she refused to let her fiance load said gift into their car to go home. Instead it went home with the MOH. Sorry, princess...but some people don't have the money to buy the $180 stainless steel crock pot you registered for!!

And now, the Tiffany's part of the story. Anna's wedding is big; really big; 14 bridesmaids big. Because she is spending her money on a Vera Wang gown (OK, her parent's are buying it), she has decides that while her attendance deserve a Tiffany's bracelet - she'd prefer not to buy them HERSELF! What's a modern Bridezilla to do?!?! You guessed it ladies... she registered for her attendant's gifts. So you give the bracelet to Anna and she in turn gives it to her bridesmaid.

What a B.I.T.C.H! Chapter two when she gets married in early July....

Ah, and now that I've survived my week (which was a nightmare that I'll share at a later date when I'm not fuming), I'm going on a whale watch tomorrow. YAY!! I love being on the water! :-) Pictures tomorrow when I get home tomorrow or early Sunday if I'm REALLY tired.

It Makes Me Smile

Sorry for the randomness... but I'm have a smidge of trouble writing a "pretty" post tonight. You all know I love bullet points, so let's bring 'em on!

  • My company has gone a little overboard on the H1N1 precautions. We have been sent a letter banning us from business travel to Mexico, and it has been highly "suggested" that we best not presume we're allowed to vacation there either. The following sign has been posted in our bathroom. Don't y'all know how to wash your hands? I do!! And I bet you do too! However, this sign will come into play in a few minutes too... There are also little signs and bottles of hand sanitizer everywhere you turn. OK, I realize that we're a VERY large healthcare corporation and that we'd look like complete idiots if it ever turned out one of our employees got "The Swine"...but we aren't five years old.

  • When last I spoke of the Ladies of Uzbekistan, it was to mention their "interesting" sense of style. It turns out - style is the least of their worries. They are very likely the ones that are the intended audience of our many, many workplace signs. One of them walked into that bathroom with me, used the facilities, came out, looked at the sign and walked out the door. Without.washing.her.hands. Uh, 'scuse me...but the instructions weren't an option. It isn't a multiple choice thing (A. Wash your hands the way WE tell you too. B. Don't wash up and just leave); you need to wash your hands!! ICK!

  • YAY for an awesome eBay purchase. I won 2 bottles of OPI Sweet Heart nail polish for $2.98. Go me! Now if I could just win the Havaianas flip-flops I've been bidding on. :-)

  • I have a new favorite song (see video below), and am considering a weekly feature called Musical Mondays. A random new song that I think you should listen too; and I have really random taste...so you could be in store for quite a treat. Heeheehee. What do you think? Is it something that you'd read/listen to?

We're NOT Going Clubbing in Uzbekistan

I'm a people person, and really like to take a few minutes now and then to just watch. It's just fascinating to be around folks who don't think you're really paying attention.

My office is quite diverse, which is a wonderful thing. There are roughly 350 of us crammed into two floors of our building.

Lately, I've noticed this one clique of ladies. From what I understand, they all originally came from the same region of Uzbekistan. As this clique has formed... they all seem to be prodding each other to wear some pretty outlandish stuff.

Today featured (names changed to protect the not-so-innocent):
"Sourpuss"- wearing black tights (I'm fairly certain that she thought they were leggings...with um, feet), a gold lame blouse and an orange bra. Really, I shouldn't know what color bra you have on!!
"Red" - wearing the shortest skirt I've ever seen, a vintage Doors t-shirt, leg warmers, and sandals WITH SOCKS!
"Bubbles" - sporting an all white ensemble; stilettos, painted on jeans, bustier and cropped jean jacket.
"Shades" - a bedazzled pair of black dress pants and a see through purple top.

Yeah, I should also mention that these ladies are all in their 40's and have taken to 1980's big hair as part of their new look too. While our office doesn't have a real rigid dress code...people also need to realize that we're part of a Fortune 25 company. It's not professional (by ANY stretch of the imagination), but it's FUN TO WATCH!!
