They're Like Herding Cats...

Christmas is the happiest time of year.  Right?!  Sometimes I need a little reminder.

I should have taken Christmas card pictures of my darling herd 'o dachshunds over Thanksgiving weekend.  But I was lax, and starting my Barnes & Noble "residency program" (more info on that soon), and well...distracted.

So Tuesday night I tried to get the pups to all look in the same direction at the same time.  Which, no matter how sweet they are - is like herding cats. Brady wanted to play chase, Beckett wanted belly rubs, Paisley refused to look at the camera and Meadow kept turning and facing in the wrong direction.

I know, you're probably asking why I had to get my Christmas cards done Tuesday night.  Well, this crazy lady doesn't use those pretty plug and play Shutterfly/Tiny Prints/Minted templates.  She designs her own cards...and the Vistaprint 60% off sale ended at midnight. Motivation, thine name is SALE!

I won't show you all my Christmas card yet.  Instead, here are a few outtakes.  Sorry if you already saw them on Instagram!

Wordless Wednesday - National Dog Day

These four.  What can I say?  They're loud. They're opinionated. They're goofy.  But they're also sweet, affectionate, loyal and love me for all of my flaws.  I'm thankful for them every single day.

Happy Nationals Dog Day from Meadow, Beckett, Paisley and Brady.  And me, of course.  :-)

And, Then They Ate A Poisonous Plant...

It goes without saying that I adore my dogs.  They are freaking awesome (if I do say so myself)!

Paisley and Brady are still at the age that they want to taste everything regardless of what it is.  Yeah...they're just over a year old, but dachshunds stay in that "puppy" stage longer than larger breeds.  Generally, I don't take issue with them (or Meadow & Beckett) picking up a stick outside and giving it a good gnaw.

We all learned something the hard way last Thursday - hydrangea bushes are mildly toxic to dogs.  Paisley and Brady decided to nibble on a hydrangea branch before dinner.  They came in, and ate dinner as normal...five minutes later I hear tummy rumbles.

First Brady started vomiting.  Then twenty minutes later Paisley started too.  Between the hours of 7 PM and 2 AM, they emptied their system of EVERYTHING.  To make matters worse, Meadow decided to "help" me clean up a little (read between the lines folks) and got sick herself soon thereafter.

As my washer and dryer ran all night (let's just say the didn't warn me before they puked), I decided to start googling.  I keep a list of all the plants that are toxic to my pets.  Hydrangea was NOT on that list...but it is now.   Everyone was just fine after getting everything up; but I did call the emergency clinic to see what signs I should watch for.

Spring is going to arrive any day now, and I'll be updating my list of "safe" plants before I do any gardening.  I ask all my fellow pet parents to do the same!  Here are a few plants to get you started:

  • Autumn crocus (Colchicum): Its active ingredient, colchicines, triggers an anti-metabolic effect that can cause rapidly dividing cells, shedding of the gastrointestinal tract, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting.
  •  Azalea (Rhododendron): This popular plant can harm a dog's cardiovascular system and trigger vomiting or gastrointestinal upset.
  • Daffodil (Narcissus): Toxic ingredients in the bulbs cause convulsions, tremors, lethargy, weakness, and upset stomachs.
  • Hyacinth (Hyacinth): This popular plant can cause severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, depression, and tremors.
  • Japanese yew (Taxis): Extremely toxic to dogs, this group of ornamental plants can cause seizures or cardiac failure. The plant and red berries are toxic.
  • Lily of the valley (Convalaria): This plant can cause heart failure, coordination problems, and vomiting.
  • Oleander (Nerium): Extremely toxic, this popular outdoor plant contains cardiac glycosides that harm the heart, decrease body temperature, cause abnormal pulse rate, and can cause death. Beware: Even people have died from eating hot dogs roasted on an oleander twig.
  • Rhubarb (Rheum): Although the stalks are used to make pies, the leaves pack the potential to cause kidney damage.
  • Sago palm (Cycads): Resembling an upside down pineapple, this plant thrives in sandy soils, especially in warmer states such as California, Texas, and Florida. A few seeds can kill a dog.
  • Tomato (Lycopersicion): Surprisingly, the greenery of this common plant, not the tomato itself, contains solanine, a toxic ingredient that can prompt gastric upset, depression, weakness, and a decrease in heart rate.
If you have any other plants that should be on the "no plant" list - please let me know!

I'm BAAAAACK!

I don't know how in the world I ended up taking such a long break from blogging!  I guess I forgot to post a few days...and just fell out of the routine.

Sorry I went MIA on you!  My Christmas and New Year were wonderful.  And honestly...I needed a mini-break from blogging.

I'm back, refreshed and ready to conquer a new year. :-)

And for listening to my blathering you get rewarded with a cute puppy!

A "Conversation" With My Herd...

I spent my Saturday night doing a transport for Furever Dachshund Rescue.  My older two are used to this...but it's the first transport run I've done (outside of a few owner surrenders) since the babies have joined the family.

To say that I got accosted when I walked in the door is an understatement. Our conversation went a little like this:

Beckett: Mom!  Where have you been? Do you know what time it is?!
Me: Yes, I do.  It's quarter past one in the morning.  Now go back to sleep!
Paisley: Momma, why do you smell like...um...dogs?
Me: That's because I had to help two doggies meet their furever families.
Brady: Did you bring them home, momma?  Can I meet them?!  PLAY?!?!?!
Me: No.  They traveled all day and I handed them over to their new people.
Paisley: Were they cute?  They smell cute.
Me: Yes, Pais.  They were cute!  In fact, one of them was named Paisley!  But she was a Pomeranian that hitched a ride on our transport.  She looked nothing like you.
Beckett/Brady: Mom, we smell a boy too!
Me: That would be Rosco.  You know his foster mom, Auntie Elaina in PA.  He got a new parents and a new fur brother tonight.
Paisley: Momma, next time can I go for the ride too?  I promise not to let any other family keep me.

Meadow: SHHHH!!!! I'Z SLEEPING!

Wordless Wednesday - Playtime

Hey Momma?  I think Paisley and Beckett are being naughty.

Brady, relax.  Paisley is just telling Beckett a story.

Um, Momma?  I really think they're being naughty!

Fine.  You're right.  Be good, you little fuzzballs!

Brady, you're such a tattletale!  I was supervising them.

Sigh.  I'll just go pout in my crate.

Notes From Paisley - The Case Of The Missing Momma

Hi!  Iz Beckett.  Momma left her laptop open again...and I decided to help Paisley hijack da blogger account.  She seems to think most of mom's friends live in the computer.  Hmph.  She might be right!

______________

Hi Everypuppy!
Iz da Paisley! (aka Pay-pay, Pay-ski, or Nugget) I really thunk that momma's fwiends and most of da family lived in da comfuter, but last week peoples started showing up.  Dey showed up at the glammy and grampy's house and momma had to spends ALL her times bisiting dem instead of lubbing on us.

Beckett called her a beach.  Whatever dat means! {OMD, Paisley!  NEVER admit to mom that I called her that!}

Anyway...we all gots stuck in da kitchen.  Which is kinda funny cuz deres is FIVE doors in the kitchen, so gates are everywheres.  She was gone fur hours and hours and hours.  At least, if felt dat way. Beckett managed to go through the window (indoor) that seperates da kitchen from da sunroom, so he got to lay on the sunroom lubseat.  LUCKY!

Now that family has gones back to homes, we want momma to bring us to PetSmart to pick out Hallo-weenie costumes.  We should get presents for being ignored, right? I mean, I'z only seven months old...but I like to looks pwetty and I hear Hallo-weenie is a BLAST!

What should we all be?  Crayons?  Bumblebees? Sheep?

Lubs and kissies,
Paisley

Updates, Bullet Points and Whatnot...

I'm hauling out the bullet points...hang on, it's going to be a random post!
  • Meadow is getting better!  She's still on an assortment of meds, but I'm weaning off the pain pills.  Fingers crossed - she continues to get better and we don't have to battle the IVDD monster again for a long, long time.
  • Are mushrooms growing in your yard?  They are in mine!  Brady found one last Thursday and got really sick really quickly.  We went to our regular vet, who diagnosed him with mushroom toxicity and made me rush him to the emergency vet.  Lots of tests, pukies and a large vet bill later - I brought him home.  The boy is back to normal, just has a few more days of meds to protect his liver and kidneys from any residual side effects. {See...I knew fungus was bad!!}
  • Please tell me that I'm not the only one that can't wait until the election is over.  People are getting NASTY on Twitter and FaceBook!  I respect people's opinions...just wish that certain people thought before they spoke. Know where your candidate stands on issues that are important to you before you start the virtual mudslinging.  Or better yet - PLAY NICE!  Neither candidate is perfect.  You choose the one that you think will screw up the country the least... In related news - if you don't vote on election day, I don't want to hear you bitch for the next four years.
  • I've started trying to plan my fall TV viewing schedule.  Yikes, my TV/DVR is going to hate me!
  • Someone please remind me that leaving my knitting down where the twin terrors (aka Brady and Paisley) can reach it is a dumb idea.  :-)  I've only started the same cowl four times now!
  • My brother is winging his way down to Atlanta to see one of his Army buddies.  I'm so happy he's getting to go away for the weekend...but a little jealous.  I love his friend and wish I could see him (and his new puppy) too.
  • Time to start choosing September's book club selection.  The poll is in the top left corner... Vote please!  Oh, and if you read this month's book, link up with Mrs. Jones and I tomorrow!
  • Lack of responsiveness seems to be spreading like wildfire lately.  I have a handful of people that I keep following up with and they don't seem to like to respond to emails and/or voicemail.  How frustrating!  Has anyone else been experiencing this?!

OK...if you've made it to the end, you deserve a puppy picture! {Yep, these were already shared on Instagram, but you forgive me, right?!}

Paisley is learning how to drink from a straw.  Seriously.  Meadow does it all the time and is teaching her... Don't come to my house and think your drink is safe.

Brady, Paisley and Beckett are waiting for my parents to walk in the door.  Sure, they look calm...but this was taken about 30 seconds before they started barking and full-body wagging!

A Pupdate on Meadow...

I know that some of you don't view dogs as fur-kids the way I do, so I won't take any offense if you skip this post.  :-)

Now, on the the pupdate...

We're hanging in.  We've spoken to multiple vets at my regular practice and at the emergency practice.  Everyone is quite confident that we can get Meadow to heal using non-surgical means.  HURRAY!

Our biggest hurdle is pain management.  She is now on a sedative, two pain relievers, a stomach acid reducer (pain pills are NOT easy on the tummy) and an anti-inflammatory.  Because she's so uncomfortable, we aren't sleeping and she refuses to be put down.  To say that my arms hurt from carrying her 24/7 is an understatement.

This morning I did crate her so I could start some laundry.  She immediately started yanking on the bars and got both her upper and lower jaws stuck in the bars.  I got her out in a matter of seconds - but she has a bump on her muzzle and upper right lip.  I feel like a horrible mom...

Despite all of this - she does seem to be healing.  We're now up to 3-4 steps before she crosses her back legs and the ataxia takes over.  PROGRESS!

While she heals, I'm accepting all offers of chocolate, coffee and wine.  Not necessarily in that order.  :-)

Prayers For Meadow

Hi everyone.  I'm hoping that you can send my little Meadow some good thoughts/prayers.

She has "gone down in the back".  That's dachshund speak for exhibiting signs of IVDD - a disk problem that is common with my little loves and other long-bodied dogs.

Wednesday my parents came over to visit and she kind of slid off the couch.  No injury - but I think that's what ultimately sparked the IVDD.  An hour or so later, she had one stumble step and quickly recovered.  At midnight potty time, she started going downhill quickly.  I rushed her to the vet around 3:30- 4 o'clock.

We're home and on "crate rest".  However, Meadow HATES the crate, so I'm holding her at all times.  Hopefully, with the cocktail of medications that she's been put on and me as her personal pillow, she'll be back to normal soon.

Hug your pups (and kittehs) for me!

Wordless Wednesday - Nap Edition (And A Poll)

Yep, it's a collection of my sweet snuggly pups.  As you can see - my dogs love my couch and my bed as much as I do.

I swear Beckett smiles every time I call him a pillow hog!

Meadow knows she's pretty.

Brady and Paisley.  She sleeps on her back most of the time. WEIRDO! :-)

Group snuggle!

Brady snores.  Like a semi rolling through the house...

Alrighty, dog mommas.  I think I want to host a pet related toy/treat swap in late September/early October.  Would you participate?  I'm putting up a poll.  Please vote in the next week.  :-)  Once I know for sure if the swap will happen, details will follow!

Notes From Beckett's Crate - Dear Puppies...

Hi, Iz me.  Beckett!  Momma says I've been a good boy (duh!), so I can "borrow" her blog.  Here'z my little letter to the new-ish puppies.
__________________

Dear Paisley and Brady,
You is cute.  I givez you dat.  And you fun...most of da time.  I totally 'spected to have to be all assertive and stuffs to get you both to fall in line. Fanks for not making me do that.

I would like to set some ground rules though...
  1. MY TOYS! I'll share some of dem...but not all of dem. AND not all at the same time.
  2. Meadow is our alpha (I mean, after da momma).  Only she is allowed to try and lead me around by the ears.
  3. Please don't put your teefs on our blankies.  They iz fuzzy and warm...and I'd cry if you ruined them.
  4. Trying to burrow under the fence isn't funny.  It freaks out da momma and now she has Uncle JC and Grampy-paws coming tomorrow to help her brainstorm on how to reinforce da fence.
  5. Momma's shoes aren't chew toys.  Trust me.  I learned dat the hard way.
  6. Da mailman IS our enemy (which momma agrees with), but the FedEx guy is our friend.
  7. Practice your "puppy dog eyes". Dey will get you ANYTHING you want.

Brady, I realize dat you is humiliated by wearin' a girly collar. Paisley eat-ed your nice blue one right off your neck.  Momma pwomises dat you'll get a handsome replacement.  So stop giving us da stink-eye.

Fanks,
Da Management Beckett

Wordless Wednesday (sorta) - Brady Edition

I still have to get the paperwork from FDR, but I'm officially a "foster failure".

This dude is staying put!  And I couldn't be more excited.

I've know since the beginning that he was meant to stay with Meadow, Beckett, Paisley and I.  He just *fits*.  Even my veterinarian told me that I HAD to keep him!  Tell me something I don't know, doc. :-)

Here's to a lifetime of Paisley trying to smother you in your sleep little man!

Oh...since he's been "Brady" from the beginning, I'm going to keep his name.  If I could have chosen a different name, I would have, but whatever.  I, do, however need a middle name.  Suggestions?!  Reminder: I like outdoorsy/hippie name.  (ie. Meadow Breeze, Beckett Scout, Paisley Skye)

July 20, 2012

WOOF (aka Hi!)

Paisley, Brady and Meadow send kisses.

Beckett, on the other hand, would like to go back to napping on the top of the couch with his favorite blankie.

Brady (and Paisley) turned 5 months yesterday and weighs in at 8.9 pounds.  He is my little moose! Dr. W thinks he'll be 14-15 pounds!

Little Pai-sky weighed in at 6.2 pounds. Dr. W thinks she'll be under 8 pounds when she's done growing! I have to get a picture of her underbite - it just slays me.

Meadow thinks having the heatwave break calls for a roll in the grass.  I agree!

The girls welcome you to come visit....but only if they can sit on your lap and you'll feed them carrots/cookies.
